*Note: Hawk Island, Crabs, Spence, The Paymaster and first emergency Silent Symphony have all been scratched from the 2010 Newcastle Gold Cup

The action of the Newcastle Spring Carnival is set to peak this Thursday with the course’s premier race day headlined by the $185,000 Newcastle Gold Cup (2300m).

The 2010 Newcastle Gold Cup has attracted a capacity final field of 16 runners including Chris Waller’s in-form gelding Hawk Island.

The improving six-year-old has been in career best form of late winning the Listed Wyong Gold Cup (2100m) at the start of the month.

Hawk Island will attempt back-to-back Cup victories on Thursday lining up in barrier 12 and is one to watch in the Ladbrokes.com.au markets.

Waller also has Snow Alert starting in the Cup, the Premiers Cup winner placing second to its stablemate last start in the Wyong Cup and ready to do one better on Thursday with Hugh Bowman aboard.

Chris Waller’s duo Hawk Island & Snow Alert will attempt a second Cup quinella after running 1-2 in the Wyong Cup last start

Another runner set to start at the top of the odds for the Newcastle Gold Cup is the Tim Martin-trained Scouting Wide drawn ideally in barrier two.

The six-year-old Zabeel gelding finished second to Snow Alert in the Premiers Cup last month but failed to place in the Kingston Town Stakes at Rosehill last start.

Other gallopers ready to do battle in the Newcastle Gold Cup including consistent veteran Crabs coming off four straight wins, Kiwi import Indikator and the Lloyd Williams-owned Martial Law.
