2011 Newcastle Cup Form Guide

September 14th, 2011

The 2011 Newcastle Gold Cup form guide is one plenty of punters have already completed judging by the range of bets already fielded on the race 24 hours out.

With a field of 15 to run there’s certainly a lot to consider however a few classy types appear to have been picked out and have floated to the top of the market.

The scratching of Ironstein has no doubt shaken the market up slightly and the fact Rodeo Playboy won’t be taking his spot as an emergency will even have an impact.

The fact remains though that there’s a lot of talent still lining up in the race and the Newcastle Cup Form Guide will be a tough one to get right.

These are the horses we’re focussing on ahead of tomorrow’s feature event:

2011 Newcastle Cup Form Guide

Spechenka

This Queensland runner has a consistent record with 11 wins from 31 starts and he has a habit of scoring a victory just about every campaign. Last prep it was the Brisbane winter carnival and his main scalp was the 2400m Caloundra Cup. He  won that on slow ground as well so with the track at Newcastle expected to be at a similar level he’s a safe bet to handle the going.

The Verminator

He’s a last start winner after claiming the Wyong Cup over 2100m and he’s set for a solid spring plugging his way along the provincial Cup’s circuit. This horse is as honest as the day is long and it’d be a huge surprise should he not run a place at the very least.

Hume

Another Queensland runner but one coming in with some indifferent form. He was near enough last in the Wyong Cup after running a decent race for fifth in the Premier’s Cup before that. He wasn’t one of the main players during the Brisbane Carnival but he placed in some smaller events before running seventh in the Tatts Mile. That being said though he’s finished in the money in nearly half his career runs so he can’t be discounted here.

Viking Legend

Another that faltered badly in the Wyong Cup  after performing a lot better in the Premier’s Cup Prelude. Before that he was poor again in the Winter Stakes and the Glasshouse Stakes so it doesn’t stack up too well for him tomorrow. That being said though he’s run well in the past and it wouldn’t surprise.

Essence Of Success

This Waterhouse runner is arguably the pick of the field and with six wins and five placings from 14 starts she’s a big player. She ran second in the Wyong Cup but the question surrounding her remains the 2300m journey. She was dominant at a mile but they need to prove she’s a genuine stayer.

Green Moon

He ran a nice second last start at Flemington and it was only the dominating December Draw who got in front of him. That type of form looks really good coming into this one and it seems to somewhat dismiss what is effectively horrid form previous to that.

Home On A Wing

Seventh last start over 2000m at Rosehill after winning over the same trek in an arguably more difficult race at Randwick before that. If you’re confused by that you’re not the only one so it could be boom or bust in Newcastle for Home On A Wing.

These are the horses we think will battle it out for Newcastle Cup honours at Broadmeadow tomorrow afternoon.
