Amexed Primed for 2016 Newcastle Gold Cup

September 14th, 2016

Leading Queensland trainer Tony Gollan is confident that Amexed is in the right form to lay a great account for himself in Friday’s 2016 Group 3 Newcastle Gold Cup (2300m).

A multiple stakes winner, Amexed was unlucky to miss a good portion of recent racing seasons through injury but returned to competition through the recent winter in slick form, highlighted by several classy wins.

Citing the lack of appropriate races for the Pentire gelding in Queensland, Gollan told AAP that he is pleased with the condition of the horse and believes that the conditions of the Newcastle Gold Cup 2016 should prove ideal.

“There isn’t a lot for him in Brisbane at the moment as he isn’t a Magic Millions horse,” Gollan said.

“It looks to be the right type of grade for him and if he goes well we can start talking about something a bit better.”

Amexed has posted a commendable four race wins and as many minors through a total of twenty-four career starts, since debuting to competition during the spring of 2013.

Amexed returned to racing during the 2014 Winter Carnival in particularly slick form; breaking through for a maiden black type win in the Group 3 Rough Habit Plate (2000m) before running fourth in the Group 3 Grand Prix Stakes (2000m) and fifth in the Group 1 Queensland Derby (2400m).

Taking a couple of runs to find his feet upon resuming this year, Amexed beat only one runner home in the ARA Fire BM85 (1630m) but responded well for third in the Hot FM BM80 (1650m) at Toowoomba on May 21st.

Returning to winning form in the Ipswich Provincial Stayers Cup (2150m) on June 18th, Amexed was rated little chance of success in the Listed Caloundra Cup (2400m) but produced a smart turn of foot in the final straight to beat a talented field to the line by close to two lengths.

Trialling well in the lead-up to his spring campaign, Amexed is sure to have taken plenty of benefit from a first-up run for sixth in the Programmed Property Services Handicap (1600m) a fortnight ago.

The 2016 Newcastle Gold Cup field and barrier draw is due to be completed and released by midday, Wednesday.
