Locally-based import Singing remains an outright $3.90 favourite in 2016 Newcastle Gold Cup betting markets with leading online bookie Ladbrokes.com.au, ahead of Sacred Master ($5.50) and Sense Of Occasion ($6).

Will Singing justify favouritism and post his first Australian victory in the Newcastle Gold Cup, or will one of his talented rivals claim an upset?

1st

Orbec ($10)

Orbec finished second in last year’s edition of the Newcastle Gold Cup, is drawn ideally in barrier 4 with only 55.5kgs in tow and represents terrific value at current odds. Storming onto the Australia racing scene last spring, the Le Havre gelding finishing in the minors in each of the Listed Wyong Cup (2080m) and Newcastle Cup before running a credible fourth in the Group 1 The Metropolitan (2400m) most notably. Sure to have taken plenty of benefit from twos starts this time, Orbec will relish a step up in distance on Friday.

2nd

Sacred Master ($5.50)

Sacred Master has found excellent form leading into the Newcastle Gold Cup and is a leading contender for a first three finish. Claiming six wins and a further four minors through sixteen career starts, the Mastercraftsman gelding ran eighth in each of the Listed Winter Challenge (1500m) and Premier’s Cup Prelude (1800m) upon debuting in Australia, before running on for a close second in the Wyong Cup a fortnight ago. Sacred Master should find a good position in transit from barrier 7 and has the notable advantage of Hugh Bowman in the saddle.

3rd

Amexed ($21)

Queensland runner Amexed is perfectly suited to the conditions of the Newcastle Cup, has drawn well and will carry only 54kgs in the feature race. A multiple stakes winner, Amexed returned during the recent Winter Carnival for a number of positive results, including wins in both the Ipswich Provincial Stayers Cup (2150m) and Listed Caloundra Cup (2400m). Amexed is undoubtedly over the 2016 Newcastle Gold Cup odds at his current $21 quote to win, or $5.90 to finish in the first three.
